Ethics in the Media Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Morals in the Media - Essay Example The idea of free discourse and opportunity of the press is along these lines the paste that holds the countryââ¬â¢s hard-battled for opportunities unblemished. Political rightness is a term used to allude to the consideration in talking that rose during the 70s, picked up quality during the 80s and stays a significant point in media relations today. At the point when it previously began being utilized, ââ¬Å"Folks on the left utilized the term to excuse sees that were viewed as excessively inflexible and, additionally, to make jokes about themselves for the monstrous consideration they took to neither say nor do whatever may insult the political sensibilities of othersâ⬠(Bliefuss, 2007). This half-kidding feeling of affectability in correspondence has since exploded into an intense danger to our privileges of free discourse and free media. While thinking about whether we really need political accuracy as a core value in our media, it is significant that we set aside the eff ort to all the more conclusively characterize the term and its application. The significance of free discourse and free media is featured in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution which states ââ¬Å"Congress will make no law regarding a foundation of religion, or precluding the free exercise thereof; or compressing the ability to speak freely, or of the press; or the privilege of the individuals quietly to amass, and to appeal to the legislature for a review of grievances.â⬠(ââ¬Å"The Constitutionâ⬠, 2006). The Founding Fathers of America considered a free press one of, if not the most, significant perspectives in the development of a free and vote based society. A lot of their accentuation on this point originated from their observation that the media directs that at that point existed in England, after whom they designed a lot of their lawful code, was unbendingly edited. Columnists who scrutinized the Kingââ¬â¢s choices were regularly imprisoned or more awful. The Founders realized that if the press were not free, the nation would not be either.

Should I Use Which or That A Simple Trick to Solve the Puzzle
Should I Use Which or That A Simple Trick to Solve the Puzzle As an editor, you begin to notice common mistakes that writers make and let me assure you, after decades of editing experience, Im certain of one thing: the which vs. that struggle is real! And if youre unsure of which one to use, youre not alone. So, lets take a look at the process of determining whether to use which or that to introduce a clause, which is really just a matter of looking at the text that follows either. But before we do, lets do a quick grammar review of restrictive clauses and nonrestrictive clauses, just to refresh your memory on what both are and how they are used in a sentence.Restrictive clausesThis writing resource defines restrictive clauses like this:A restrictive modifying clause (or essential clause) is an adjective clause that is essential to the meaning of a sentence because it limits the thing it refers to. The meaning of the sentence would change if the clause were deleted. Because restrictive clauses are essential, they are not set off by commas.Center for Writing StudiesNonrestrictive clausesThe same source defines nonrestrictive clauses like this:A nonrestrictive modifying clause (or nonessential clause) is an adjective clause that adds extra or nonessential information to a sentence. The meaning of the sentence would not change if the clause were to be omitted. Nonrestrictive modifying clauses are usually set off by commas.Center for Writing StudiesSo, what does this have to do with which and that? The reason weve reviewed the definition of restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses is simple. If the words that follow which or that are a restrictive clause, you need to use that. If they are a nonrestrictive clause, which is the correct choice.Lets see how that works with a few examples:The car that hit me yesterday was driven by an unlicensed driver. In the above sentence, that is the correct choice because that hit me yesterday is a clause that is necessary to the meaning of the sentence. If we dont know the information that the cl ause gives usâ"that hit me yesterdayâ"then important details will be missing in the sentence and the sentence will change in meaning. Without that clause, the sentence would just be The car was driven by an unlicensed driver.Wellâ¦okay, but which car? And why are we bringing it up? See how it is important information? Now lets look at another example:That new restaurant, which I didnt realize was there, is now my favorite place to eat on South Main.In the above example, which I didnt realize was there is a nonrestrictive clause because it could be removed from the sentence and the sentence would retain its meaning. That new restaurant is now my favorite place to eat on South Main. Now what about the commas?Knowing whether to use which or that will also help you know the correct way to punctuate the clause, in most cases. When you use which, the clause should be set off by commasâ"meaning that there should be a comma before which and another comma at the end of the clause. Doing th is also helps visualize whether the clause can be removed without changing the meaning of the sentence.Alternately, with a restrictive clause beginning with that, commas are not needed to set off the clause.

Henry D. Thoreaus views on nature, society, and man.
Thoreau Views on Nature, Society, and Man Henry David Thoreaus life began on July 12, 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. At a young age he began to show an interest in writing. In 1833, at the age of sixteen, Thoreau was accepted to Harvard University. Although his parents could not afford the cost of tuition, his family offered to help with the funds, and in August he entered Harvard. In 1837 he graduated and applied for a teaching position at a public school in Concord. However, he refused to flog children as punishment. He choose instead to deliver moral lectures. The community looked down upon this, and a committee was asked to review the situation. They decided that the lectures were not ample punishment, so they ordered Thoreau toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In Walden, he questions the lifestyles that people choose. He makes his readers wonder if they have been chosen the kind of life that will really offer them happiness. Are they merely living a career or some other narrowly routine or is a worthwhile life being lived . Thoreau wonders if the truly valuable elements of life are being taken advantage of if a person is not living simply. If a person is so caught up in working or never having enough in life, one wonders, and satisfaction are difficult to obtain. As he states in the beginning Walden, most men, even in this comparatively free country, though mere ignorance and mistake, are so occupied with the factitious cares and superfluously coarse labors of life that is finer fruits cannot be plucked by them (Thoreau 6). This means that people care more about the finer things in life and easier work instead of natures gifts and hard work. Thoreau draws a parallel between others preoccupation with money and his own enjoyment of non-monetary wealth. Thoreau discusses the issue of how we spend our time and energies. It is obvious that his townspeople are not as economical as they spend many hours working very hard to accomplish very little, showing a false sense of economy. Phonological and Writing Systems of English and Thai Free Essays
In the second language and foreign language (FL) classroom literature, it has been claimed that several variables related to the interface between L1 and L2/ FL, i. e. psychological aspects, contribute to language learnersââ¬â¢ perception and production of a foreign language. We will write a custom essay sample on Phonological and Writing Systems of English and Thai or any similar topic only for you Order Now A study of these variables could have important implications for the teaching of foreign languages. More recently, the role of spoken and written L2 input (e. g. Bassetti, 2008; Moyer, 2009) has been studied in greater detail, and there is an abundance of such studies. In this chapter, the relevant literature will be illustrated and critiqued, with particular attention to the works on phonological systems and writing systems across languages and the interaction between the two systems. In addition, the influence of affective factors on the productive skills of Thai learners is reviewed. The first section of the chapter is a discussion of the relevant literature on the differences between phonological and writing systems across languages and the resulting language learner output, followed by a review of the framework to be used in this study. The final section is a review of the effects of the affective factors on the learnersââ¬â¢ language achievement and language performance as well as on language learning. 1. The related literature The findings reported in the literature that the majority of Thai learners of English demonstrate a low degree of proficiency, especially in the productive skills (speaking and writing) reflect the fact that ââ¬Å"English language pedagogy in Thailand â⬠¦ is still in its infancyâ⬠(Wongsothorn, A. , Hiranburana, K. Chinnawongs, S. 2002; Laopongharn Sercombe, 2009, among others). As reported in the national survey (1999) conducted by the Office of Educational Testing of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (in Khamkhien, 2010), ââ¬Å"high school sstudentsââ¬â¢ productive skills were generally below 50 per cent, i. e. below average, leading to the recommendation in the report for immediate improvements of writing ability in all educational institutions in the country â⬠(Wongsothorn et al. , 2002: 112). There are several factors that could prevent Thai learners of English from aining a sthrong command of productive skills in English. In terms of the phonological system, Yangklang (2006) investigated the improvement in pronunciation of English final [l] in 40 Thai sstudents in Matthayom Suksa 4 at Assumption Convent Lamnarai School who had used the Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) programme she was testing. The CAI in the study, as described by Yangklang: ââ¬Å"contained drill and practice exercises. Drill and practice activities aimed to provide learners with adequate practices and also to review items that were new to learners. The goal of the drill and practice activities was to teach sstudents to pronounce words with final /-l/ accurately and automatically. â⬠These practices and exercises were, therefore, provided by the computer programme as part of the post-lesson activities. The participants were divided into two groups according to their competence of pronunciation of English, one with good pronunciation and the other with poor ability. Prior to the experimental task, each participant had taken a placement test to classify their pronunciation competence. Subsequently, they all took three pronunciation post-tests every week for three weeks. It was found that both groups of sstudents improved their pronunciation significantly after they used the CAI programme. In general, both groups had positive reactions to the use of the CAI programme for improving their pronunciation. Obviously, the programme helped the participants improve their pronunciation, given that they had intensive training on pronunciation practice of specific English consonant sounds, and the post-test of pronouncing the sound was administered immediately after the programme training. As Graham (1997) and Macaro (2006), among others, have pointed out, effective language learning is about mastering communicative skills, i. e. speaking, writing, listening, and reading. This indicates that the more learners practise, the better their communicative performance in a language. In line with this, the results did not show anything unexpected. The point at issue, which I shall leave for future study, is how can accurate pronunciation, e. g. of the /l/ sound, be maintained after short-term, intensive training? In Yangklangââ¬â¢s findings, the English consonant sound /l/ which constitutes the coda, i. e. word-final ending in /l/, (see Figure 1 below) could be realised as [l], [n], and [w] by the participants. The participants with good pronunciation appeared to produce the [l], whilst the participants from the poorer group appeared to generate [n] and [w] instead of [l] or [? ]. The [n] was produced more frequently than [w] by these participants, however. Yangklang did not discuss why [n] and [w] constitute allophones of /l/. In the study, it was the poorer group who produced such allophones, and it was reported from interviews that the participants had not yet been exposed to an environment where English is used as a medium of communication. In the word list, part of the research instrument which consisted of pronunciation tests contained words like ââ¬Ëballââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëmileââ¬â¢, etc. which are English loanwords. I assume that there is some force of segmental alternation with regard to English loanwords. As /l/ is not available at coda position, the notion of final consonant phoneme alternation appears plausible. That is to say, [n] and [w] appear to be alternatives. Paradis (1996) in Kentowicz Suchato (2006), claimed that the location of such segments in feature geometry and prosodic structure was relevant in dealing with segmental alternation in loanwords. Based on the data, /l/ and /n/ fall into the same natural class, in that both of them are sonorant consonants, which can be represented by the feature matrices How to cite Phonological and Writing Systems of English and Thai, Papers

A Tale Of Two Cities Analysis Essay Example For Students
A Tale Of Two Cities Analysis Essay ResurrectionMultitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:2). This is basically the definition or example of what resurrection is. This was shown when the Lord told this quote to Daniel. Although in A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, resurrection isnt literally used as being awoken from the dead, but certain areas of this resurrection are certainly related. Not only is resurrection shown to the reader on a physical level as the Bible shows it, but it is also shown through spiritually and mentally. Several characters are examples to these three different parts of resurrection. Charles Dickens uses resurrection in his novel, A Tale of Two Cities, to give the reader enlightenment and break, due to the horrible time period and bloody nature, during the revolutionary time period, the novel takes place in. Many individuals will say that resurrection is another word for being Recalled to Life, a s in the title of book one. Being Recalled to Life, can be shown on a mental, physical, and spiritual level, just the same as resurrection. Dickens gives the reader a taste of being Recalled to Life, right off the bat, when Mr. Lorry, in his stagecoach, is set out for Dover to bring Dr. Manette back to England, sends Jerry Cruncher to Tellsons Bank with the message, Recalled to Life. Then as the coach lurches on towards its destination, he falls asleep and dreams. After such imaginary discourse, the passenger inhis fancy would dig, and dig, dig, now, with a spade, now with a great key, now with his hands-to dig this wretched creature out (p.47). Not only is the term Recalled to Life used towards the beginning of the book, but the term is also used threoughout the novel.Due to Dr. Mannettes rescue, he is a definate example of being Recalled to Life. He has been in prison for nearly eighteen full years of mental torment and when he got out, he was asked the question, you know that you are recalled to life (p.46). Due to Manettes mental and spiritual resurrection from his imprisonment, he no longer calls or refers to himself as 105 North Tower (p.73). Although he knew he had a daughter, he never had a relationship with her. He is spiritually resurrected with his daughter when they first meet. She, Lucie Manette, forms a relationship with him, which makes Dr. Manette never want to leave her. The Doctor was in his best condition, and looked specially young. The resemblence between him and Lucie was very strong at such times, and as they sat side by side, she leaning on his shoulder, and he resting his arm on the back of her chair, it was very agreeable to trace the likeness (p.130). Not only does Lucie spiritually resurrect her father, but she also mentally resurrects him. Throughout the novel, Dr. Manette has gone through several mental tragic time periods. It seems that the only one to revive him to his normal health was his daughter Lucie. In the novel, Dickens uses Jerry Cruncher to give the reader some laughter. He is taken as humorous character, which gives the readers a definate break in the Victorian Times. Jerry, a man with not too many feelings, he, at first, has his own way of resurrection. To be physically resurrected would be to actually be taken by hand and be removed from the dead, and this is exactly what Jerry does. Dickens refers to Jerry as-a man that digs up bodies for a living-as being a Resurrection Man. Dickens refers to him as a Resurrection Man because during the Victorian Times, when the revolution took place, people who dug up graves would be called Resurrection Men. To Jerry and his son he is only going, so called fishing, at midnight. What Jerry is actually doing is resurrecting dead individuals physically by hand. Due to being a poor man, this is the only way he can make his money. He takes all the rich valuables from the graves and sells the bodies to scientists to work on. Calcium Element EssayAs one can see, the revolution was a harsh and horrible experince to go through. Several deaths took place, which seemed, in those days, the center of attention. Every time there was a death sentence case, it seemed that, a cloud of blue-flies were swarming about the prisoner, in anticipation of what he was soon to become (p.97). Dickens uses the theme resurrection to give the reader a break in the tragic story of violence. Since Dickens is a Christian man, he felt he had to give the reader a touch of the Bible throughout his writngs of A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities Analysis Essay Example For Students A Tale of Two Cities Analysis Essay A Tale of Two Cities has long been one of Charles Dickens most favored books. This book opens in the year 1775 by contrasting two cities: Paris, France and London, England. Throughout this story various characters are recalled to life, meaning that they have had a new chance at life. Dr. Manette is clearly mad after being in prison for eighteen years. When Lucie, the Dr.s daughter, and Mr. Lorry eventually nurse the doctor back to a healthy state and out of his insane state they had recalled him to life. Dr. Manette was nursed from an insane state with no real life to a sane one with a very functional life. In doing this Lucie and Mr. Lorry, in a way, gave Dr. Manettes life back to him or recalled him to life. Another instance in which someone is recalled to life involves Charles Darnay. Charles Darnay is on trial for treason in EnglandBook 2, Ch.2-4. C.J Stryver and Sydney Carton are representing Darnay in this trial. Sydney Carton saves Darnay from death in this trial with his miraculous wits. Through this Darnay is given another chance at life ,and therefore was recalled to life. The last and most significant instance of someone being recalled to life is found in the last chapters of this book. Sydney Carton has recently switched places with his look alike, Darnay, and is awaiting the guillotine. While Sydney awaits his death he thinks, It is a far, far better thing that I do, then I have ever done, it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known. Through these words Sydney recognizes that by sacrificing his life for Darnay, a loved one of Lucie, he will be doing the best thing that he has ever done and can do. Sydney is finally satisfied with himself, he is no longer a drunken fool, but a hero that now can live or die with himself. By dying, and saving Darnay for Lucie, Sydney Carton is recalled to life. Throughout this book recalled to life has been the most important theme. Almost all of the main characters in this novel were recalled to life. This theme was the most important because it allowed us, the readers, to see the characters trates being used by them and to understand how much a character would do for another. When Carton represented Darnay on trial and saved his life we saw how smart Carton was. In the last instance of recalled to life we saw how much Carton really felt for Lucie when he saved Lucies husbands life in return for his own. The theme recalled to life is seen throughout this novel and should be recognized as one of the most important.

Analysis of Theoretical Framework free essay sample
Analysis of Theoretical Framework EDUC 701: Theories and Research in Educational Psychology February 24, 2013 ? Introduction Teachers are required to teach reading and comprehension skills to students and help them be able to read and comprehend materials from the past and present. Dr. Constance L. Pearson (1990) writes a dissertation entitled The Comparison of the Effects of Three Prereading Advance Organizers on the Literal Comprehension of Fifth-Grade Social Studies Materials in this paper he is trying to see if the use of a prereading advanced organizer would help build the fifth grade students comprehension and knowledge skills. During this stage of students learning development it is very important to start working on their reading and comprehension skills. Analysis The theoretical framework for this dissertation is using fifth-grade social studies materials and having a prereading strategy of an advanced organizer to see if it would increase comprehension and knowledge in the children while they read their textbooks. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of Theoretical Framework or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The advanced organizers that are being used are visual, graphic and problematic situation approach. The advanced organizers are being used to help the students with any concepts that they are not familiar with. By using these organizers strategies would be developed to help assist in learning the material. There were two research questions to validate the theory that is being used. The first question related to reading comprehension and how it affects students when they are given a prereading activity while using one of the advanced organizers. The second research question relates to the reading comprehension of the other two advanced organizer approaches when they are given a preading activity. It is believed that students reading comprehension can be increased from the use of the advanced organizers for their particular subject area. The purpose of this research was to determine if one of the prereading advance organizer strategies would carry distinction from the other two approaches. During the research many factors had to be considered and one such factor were students not being able to derive meaning from what they read in content area textbooks. One reason that the reader may have a problem with content text is that the material is written on a higher reading level then the intended reader. As a result the writers have tried to simplify the terminology and shortened the sentences. They did not take into consideration factors that inherent in the reader such motivation, reading ability and interest. There is one human factor that has the most influence on comprehension and that is schemata. Comprehension of the material is being determined by the knowledge that the reader brings to the selection. The more schemata the reader has for the topic the more they will understand the topic. Content materials especially in the area of social studies seek to develop many concepts; students often do not have the framework to attach new knowledge. Students must have an understanding of the concepts in order to comprehend the material they are reading. In chapter two of the dissertation Pearson explains how the research and literature that relate to the relationship of advance organizers to reading comprehension. He discusses the history of the study of reading comprehension and advance organizers. The schema theory is discussed as it relates to the study of advance organizers. Before 1970 reading comprehension was viewed as a process solely activated by the text itself. The views on reading comprehension have since changed and now text has been determined to be only the framework for meaning. The reader must be able to construct an internal conceptual representation of what is being read. Conclusion Therefore, through research it was determined the usage of advance organizers before the materials were read, did bring about some remembering by activating important concepts that were already present in the childrenââ¬â¢s cognitive structure. The usage of advanced organizers should reinforce the importance of the new materials by providing the framework of previous learning materials. To determine if the usage of advanced organizers remain effective you should upon its ability to support new ideas from the studentââ¬â¢s previous ideas. The prereading strategy of advanced organizers introduces how students can attach concepts to new learning materials Reference Pearson, C. L. P. (1990). The comparison of the effects of three prereading advance organizers on the literal comprehension of fifth-grade social studies materials. (Doctoral Dissertation). Scotland Culture essays
Scotland Culture essays Scotland is a foreign region in the United Kingdom with much culture and heritage. The history of Scotland goes back many years and can be looked at as an evolved system where culture is the foundation of all of society. Because culture is the learned set of practices, beliefs, values, and rules for proper conduct and material objects that are shared by members of society, one can only want to look further into what makes the Scottish culture so unique. There are eight regions withing the Scotland territory. These include Aberdeenshire and Grampian Highlands, Central Scotland, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Highlands, Orkney and Shetland Islands, South West, and West Coast. The land mass of Scotland is about 78,133 km2. The weather in Scotland is the main topic of conversation from January until December from one end of Scotland to the other. Rumors abound that it is always raining, always below freezing and always under seven feet of snow. However, one thing you can be sure of is the weather is changeable and local to the extreme - it can be raining at the front of a house and not in the back. There is a local saying that says if you don't like the weather just wait 'a wee whiley' and it will change. Basically December, January and February is winter. The spring months of March and April can still be cold but generally not too bad. Summer comes early and June gives Scotland dark for just one or two hours between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., and then the sun is out again. July and August can be very hot, sometimes too much so and misty and humid. By September things cool down and it is usually quite warm enough to head to the beaches. Autumn is generally excellent weather for walking right through t o November. However, a word of caution - dark comes very quickly on the mountains and what starts off as a walk up a mountain can turn into a lesson in survival very quickly. For most, family in Scotland was the only sense of s...

Analyse the nature of risks in healthcare and critically discuss the Essay
Analyse the nature of risks in healthcare and critically discuss the role of managers in minimizing and managing risks - Essay Example These risks can be mitigated in a number of different ways. Every health organization needs a system of risk management ââ¬â they need to be able to identify the risks, quantify the risks, prioritise the risks, then mitigate and manage these risks. Management needs to be able to delegate risk management to experts, because management tends to try to do too much. They need analysts who can help them with this, and these analysts need to be within the management flow. At the individual level, management needs to be able to coach, mentor and motivate; at the group level, the management needs to be able to build teams and resolve conflicts; and at the organizational level, the management must be able to build culture. Building culture is important, because if an organization has a culture of risk management, then this organization will be ahead of the curve on risk management ââ¬â this means that risk management permeates every aspect of the organization. Because organizations th emselves can have risks, as opposed to personal risks, and this is where the very organization encourages risky processes either inadvertently or on purpose. The role of the manager might be to encourage the culture of the organization to adopt risk management, provide support for risk management practices which identify weaknesses and resolve them, or to mentor the individuals to lessen the individual risks regarding risk management. This paper will explore these aspects of risk management. What Is Risk Management? The first part of the risk management process, according to Carter et al. (1994) is the identification of the risks. The identification process of risks may be approached by a combination of methods, including intuitive management; using department experts; using standard questionnaires and checklists; using expert computer-based systems; using structured interviews; through brainstorming sessions; or using outside specialists/consultants. The second process is risk quan tification, and this means that the impact and probability of a each risk is estimated for each risk. After that, the estimate is quantified by using a spreadsheet which estimates timescales and costs. The next process is risk prioritising and filtering, which means that the important risks are recognized and controlled, and risks are prioritized according to whether they care a Category 1 risk (cost effect only); Category 2 risk (contingency plans and costs affected); or Category 3 risk (programme contingency and cost affected). The Category three risks are the higher priority, and the risks are prioritized from there. The fourth part of risk management is the processing and presentation of risk data, and this means the risk data is put through the spreadsheet with different variables. After the risks are identified, quantified, prioritized, and presented, the next four steps identified by Carter et al. (1994) are focused upon mitigating and managing these risks. Mitigating strategi es include avoiding the risk altogether by removing the cause of the risk; transferring the risk, which means that the risk is passed to somebody capable of handling that particular risk; reduction of the risk, which would consist of investing in insurance or some other up-front investment; management of the risk, which means that the risk is managed continuously until it is managed out; and contingency, in which funds are produced for the risks which are

Obamas 2008 Cooper Union Speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Obamas 2008 Cooper Union Speech - Essay Example Obama, in 2008, had a plan to renew America by forcing penalties on poor and greedy corporate leaders, giving consumers housing-related tax credits, and create new regulations that make sure financial institutions do not take on high levels of risk, however, this renewal strategy has not been fully effective. Ã Obama saw that tighter regulation would prevent financial institutions from taking opportunities away from regular, middle-class citizens. He felt that a deregulated environment had been a reason to why investment companies and commercial banks took on far too much debt and there was no system in place to make sure they had enough capital reserves. This is because risky asset-backed securities and derivatives were off-balance sheet transactions. He wanted a crackdown on market manipulation that was causing many companies to experience fast drops in their stock values when short-sellers were using unethical methods to drive down stock prices for their own gain. Ã Obama also saw that building a type of best practice risk management system for banks and for the general economy would renew America. He sees that this change in risk management and a change of corporate leadership attitudes would reshape the economy for the 21st Century and give middle-class consumers more protection against another financial crisis. Many regular citizens lost their jobs and lost their wealth as a result of unregulated investment institutions and Obama saw renewal as a means of putting these stakeholders first. Ã He seems to see that the division between the wealthy and the less-advantaged is taking away the American dream. Therefore, by making sure that corporations and investment firms are held accountable for their actions, it will make sure that middle-class consumers can again seek the American dream without being victimized by an economy damaged by greed and poor government oversight.

Mandatory Military Service: A good concept?
Mandatory Military Service: A good concept? Is mandatory military service a good thing for the country? Both World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War have one thing in commonmost who served were drafted through a mandatory system. Recently, high ranking Democratic Congressman, Charles Rangel, proposed reinstating the draft. Is mandatory military service a good thing for the country? I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a military draft, as well as different types of compulsory military service. When people hear about a military draft the first thing that comes to mind is the Vietnam War. The Vietnam draft system was flawed to say the least. Class played a major role in the draft. It was quite easy for those with general knowledge of the Selective Service system to avoid being drafted. Many believe some of the wealthy used their connections to get into the safer branches of the military. President Bushs political opponents have accused him of using his fathers connections during the Vietnam War to get into the relatively safe Texas Air National Guard. College students could apply for student deferment, and at the time most college students were upper class. Student deferment would last until the student finished their studies and earned a degree. If a draft was instituted today college students would only be deferred until the end of their semester. During the Vietnam War, medical deferments were common. Physical problems were legitimate reasons to be exempt from active duty service, but the lower class was at a disadvantage because of fewer medical records. For example, former presidential candidate Howard Dean was exempt from serving in the military during the Vietnam War because of a back problem for which he had medical records of from a prominent New York doctor. Some of the poor didnt have the medical records to support their ailments, and were forced to serve. According to draft supporters, a draft would unite the country. Today, most young people arent actively engaged in their government. A draft would get everyone invested in our foreign policy. Congressman Rangel believes instituting the draft would lead to fewer wars. Its one thing supporting a pre-emptive strike on a country when others in the volunteer military will be performing the mission but would you support it if you were on the front lines of that pre-emptive strike? Another question that must be asked is Should those who dont want any part of the military be forced to serve their country in the event of a draft? Our militarys objective is to defend freedom in our own country and in the world. So, a draft, in some ways, sacrifices the very values we are supposed to be defending. The Supreme Court has ruled that conscientious objection can be from religious or non-religious beliefs but can not be because of a particular war. Many objectors have served in a weapons free branch of the military, or in some form of community service. According to the Selective Service System, they can evaluate and induct everyone drafted within 193 days of an emergency. With such rapid progress, is mandatory military service now necessary? The job of the Selective Service is to provide manpower to the armed forces. Therefore, the 193 days does not include the rigorous training that is standard with the U.S. military. With such great technology at its disposal, the U.S. military makes sure its members are knowledgeable about all its weapons systems. There are many issues that must be addressed to avoid mass problems if a draft were held today. Today, homosexuals are barred from serving in the military. What would stop any person who doesnt want to serve from claiming to be a homosexual? Also, would women be drafted? Today, only men have to register for the Selective Service. If the situation in the Middle East continues to worsen and spread, our government may have no other choice but to place more boots on the ground. The only way to solve troop shortages would be to re-instate the draft. We must hope that our government would only send us in harms way when this country is truly in danger. Jack Sparrow Ca
Jack Sparrow Character Analysis. The Pirates of the Caribbean film series is one of the most popular film series to run its course through theaters in recent years. Action, adventure, and romance are some of the things we come to expect when we sit down to watch these amazing film adventures. But one of the things we can rely on most is the presence of Captain Jack Sparrow. While Sparrow was conceived to be only a supporting character, he proved to be popular after he was added into Disneyââ¬â¢s theme park ride that spawned the movie series.Of course, a character as ââ¬Å"far outâ⬠as Captain Jack had to be played by someone equally out-there: Johnny Depp. First weââ¬â¢ll talk about how Depp got into the role of Captain Jack and then I will analyze how Jack is portrayed as a character. In 2001, Depp was at Walt Disney Studios looking to do a family film. However, the fact that the Pirates theme park ride was going to be adapted into a film caught his attention first.Depp looked at the movie adaptation as a chance to revive his favorite movie genre,à and he was even more pleased when he found out the script fit his personality perfectly: a quirky pirate looking for adventure and in the end, showing he has a soft side. Depp was cast on June 10, 2002. Producerà of the series Jerry Bruckheimerà said that Depp was ââ¬Å"an edgy actor who will kind of counter the Disneyà Country Bearsà soft quality and tell an audience that an adult and teenager can go see this and have a good time with it. When the cast got together for their read-through of the script, Depp surprised everyone by portraying the character in an off-kilter manner. After Depp did some research of his own on 18th century pirates, he compared the swashbucklers to modern rock stars and said he would base his performance onà Keith Richards. In a comic follow-up, Richards would later appear in two cameos as Jack's father,à Captain Teague, inà At World's Endà andà On Stranger Tides. Director Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer had confidence in Depp, in part because Orlando Bloom would be playing the traditional ââ¬Å"heroâ⬠character in the series.Depp also improvised the film's final line, ââ¬Å"Now, bring me that horizonâ⬠, which was writer Ted Elliotââ¬â¢s favorite line. Disney executives were, at first, confused by Depp's performance. Some even asked him whether the character wasà drunkà or gay. Michael Eisnerà even proclaimed while watching the events unfold, ââ¬Å"He's ruining the film! â⬠à Depp actually fought back and responded, ââ¬Å"Look, these are the choices I made. You know my work. So either trust me or give me the boot. à Some industry insiders also questioned Depp's casting, as he wasnââ¬â¢t known for working in a traditional studio setting and had even been called an unconventional actor. Depp's portrayal as Captain Jack Sparrow was critically acclaimed. Alan Morrison said ââ¬Å"Gloriously over-the- topà â⬠¦ In terms of physical precision and verbal delivery, it's a master-class in comedy acting. â⬠à Roger Ebertà also found his performance ââ¬Å"original in its every atom. There has never been a pirate, or for that matter a human being, like this in any other movieà â⬠¦ his behavior shows a lifetime of rehearsal. Ebert also praised Depp for moving away from the how Captain Jack was written. Depp won aà Screen Actor's Guildà award for his performance, and was also nominated for aà Golden Globeà and anà Academy Award for Best Actor, the first in his career. Film School Rejectsà argued and wrote, ââ¬Å"That because of Pirates, Depp has become as much a movie star as aà character actor. Johnny Depp returned as Jack Sparrow inà Dead Man's Chest, the first time the actor ever made a sequel. Drew McWeenyà stated, ââ¬Å"Remember how coolà Han Soloà was inà Star Warsà the first time you saw it?And then remember how much cooler he seemed whenà Empireà came out? This is that big a jump. â⬠à Depp received anà MTV Movie Awardà and aà Teen Choice Awardà forà Dead Man's Chest, and was also nominated for anà Empire Awardà and anotherà Golden Globe. For his performance inà At World's End, Depp won anà MTV Movie Awardà for Best Comedic Performance, as well as aà People's Choice Award, aà Kids' Choice Award, and anotherà Teen Choice Award. He has signed on to reprise the role for future sequels. Captain Jack appeals to us as moviegoers because he brings out our inner-most sense of adventure. We want him to succeed and we feel like we are right there when he takes us on an adventure. The first time we meet Captain Jack in The Curse of the Black Pearl he is sailing into Port Royal on a dinghy-like boat that is sinking to the ocean floor the during the whole scene. He eventually walks onto the dock from the crowââ¬â¢s nest, acting if nothing ever happened. He immediately pays off a dock worker in order to skip the mandatory ID check required to enter the city. This is what we love from a character; someone who makes the best of his situation and finds a way to get into the crowd. In the real world, we would never considering acting like Jack does. But in the movies, his adventure-seeking nature is something we crave. Despite all of the moral faults of Sparrow, the audience still finds him loveable. This is all thanks to Johnny Deppââ¬â¢s masterful portrayal. Depp was able to create a very human, multifaceted, believable character. Whatââ¬â¢s even weirder is that Jack is not the typical pirate that peaks our interests. He is not bulky, muscular, or very intimidating. His actions at some times are very effeminate.Although he used his brain more than brawn, the films will show us that he is very athletic on his own. Sparrow also shows us that it doesnââ¬â¢t matter who our friends are. Just look at his crew while he is commanding the Black Pearl. It is the most rag-tag group of pirates you will ever see. It even included a woman in the first movie, something that was very taboo for Captains to have in their crew at the time. Another bright spot on Sparrow is that he uses everything that is available to him. He may not be the best swordsman, but if there is anything that could possibly be a weapon near him, he will use it.Anything you can think of really; whiskey barrels, horses, even him fighting on a water-wheel that generates power. In Dead Manââ¬â¢s Chest Jack was found to be the accepted leader of a tribe of Caribbean natives. He somehow mastered their language and was living in the lap of luxury until he found out that he was going to be a human sacrifice. Things like this are what draw us to The Captain. His wild and crazy adventures may come to an end someday, but he will always be memorable to me and definitely left a mark on the movie world.

Concept of Epigenetics
The basic concept of epigenetic is a simple pattern for human development. There are different marks needed to expedite these marks which some include encoding RONA'S, DNA meditation and even CPA denunciations. Epigenetic work very complicated they maintain the cell cycle which changes the differences when it comes to expressing genes without changing the DNA sequence. When dealing with germ cells and the developing embryo the reprogramming and remaking the right amount of epigenetic when it comes to the major time periods of placement in cell types. The early regulation of development includes the X- chromosome being active and starts to imprint they will eventually change in time respectively. Disorders- There could be lots of disorders that can be lead by epigenetic like Subjectivity and imprinting disorders to humans. Also plenty of Phenotype variation that runs from normal variation to human disease/disorders. There are lots of environmental affects to the human and offspring. The re have been studies that nutrition has something to do with the death rate with articulators disease and diseases which could be passed on from offspring to offspring whether its dads side or moms. Studies show that if a father doesn't have enough food or nutrients in a certain period of time most likely when hitting puberty his offspring are less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases. Surprisingly if food is plenty for a certain period time then offspring are more likely to get disease. Changes in diet can change genes which are then passed down to offspring from male.Technology- Plenty of changes to epigenetic technology. Some of these changes include how processes not Just at specific genes but can also study the changes in epigenetic that Just occurred. There have also been techniques used to assess the enzymes which make it easier for people using the machine and trying to study the enzymes. Issues Economical- This field of epigenetic has been growing and researchers say that this means that the market for investors will open up. There is a project called ââ¬Å"The Cancer Genome Atlasâ⬠this project made $50 million from different institutes. This project also made a grant total of $3. 5 million which has a goal in mind that epigenetic changes that cause cancer. Souses comment that this money is small and will grow in the coming years. Companies have been making epigenetic drugs for the public and to put on the market, but this is tough for people to reach since epigenetic is infancy. Political- Some people could take advantages from this issue and may benefit them while it will be the complete opposite for others. There will be privacy issues to play in on an individual. The law system doesn't have any for epigenetic data. With this the digitization of medical records which holds a lot of information of a person could be stolen/lost a lot more significantly numbers could be increasing. Societal- Environmental changes can happen since there are epigenetic phenomena. Plenty of these changes are made in the beginning of one's development and can have a major impact for a individuals life span. Lots of evidence that epigenetic types can be generational inherited in animals as well. But on the other hand gives the inheritance a longer life span. Environmental and Ethical IssuesEpigenetic can cause lots of diseases to offspring's. The epigenetic causes effects in fetus which can have obesity and have a shorter life span. It can have a major response to the environment and can intake during pregnancy or the growth of a child. During puberty for both genders male and female both directly have impact the health of subsequent offspring due to the DNA patterns. This mechanism if changed the availability of methodology or changing enzymes could have a major effect. But a solution to this would be a UN-balanced protector energy restricted diet an help epigenetic marks.Diagrams Sources I think my sources were pretty reliable considerin g they were from research groups or university researchers. I would give them plenty of credit since I had no previous knowledge on this topic but after reading a couple of articles I got the basic idea behind the technology. Other websites got into to much detail or were too complicated to read and didn't really talk about the major points. The websites I was on were written by doctors and medical students that have knowledge on epigenetic and know if its trending in the future or not.

Different Types Of Relationships Within Our Lives
There are varying types of relationships that occur in our lives. These relationships can be with our friends, family, coworkers, classmates, and acquaintances. Not all of these relationships are good relationships. Even the relationships that we think are good can quickly or gradually change and fall into a bad relationship. Many theories have been established to help people navigate their way through it. Better yet by improving their relationships or terminating it. I will explain my own relationship that appears to have digressed to more of an acquaintances. My relationship is based on friendship that I have had with a guy named Ryan since I was 3 or 4 years old. We first met each other as little kids at the church nursery. As we grewâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦We both wanted to be Fire Fighters. That fact that there was a group of us who didnââ¬â¢t want to go to college at all, but wanted a form of a trade, which only increased our friendship. It seemed like within this sma ll group of friends we would hang out together forever. However, everything changed when my brother and I moved into our own place in High School. We developed this independence that most kids our age didnââ¬â¢t get to feel yet. Ryan happened to be the only other guy among our friends of achieving financial independence and leaving home. Once we graduated our class went on their senior trip while my brother, Ryan and I immediately attended PCC EMT certification program. We bonded a little more during that because we were the only three that didnââ¬â¢t go. But things didnââ¬â¢t seem to take the course that we thought that it would. After the first month (honeymoon stage) we started to notice things about each other that we never knew about. Tom and I enjoy socializing but we truly enjoyed our privacy and isolation. Ryan turned out was a very socially needy individual. After class we would go home and we would study and eat something. He always liked to cook, and made bizarre dishes. He would always ask us to taste. I would always decline because in my mind if I wanted it I would ask for some. He would say he was insulted in a jokingly manner but later he would say that it truly bothered him. After EMT school we were all working during the rest of the

The narrative set by the lyrics Essay Example For Students
The narrative set by the lyrics Essay For this video they have used the telephone as a metaphor for Gagas brain which has been involved within her costume as a head dress and the fact that she is not answering anyone and appears disconnected from reality, this presentation is shown when Gaga stares blankly whilst the character played by Tyrese Gibson is eating a meal which she has covered in poison. An illustrative narrative involves a literal representation and a heightened meaning of a selected text. Do it like a dude8 by Jessie J uses the concept of illustration narrative combined with a non-linear narrative as within the video she and the other girls who are performing in the video show literal gestures which are commonly scene within the young male dominated world such as with the lyric grab my crotch, wear my hat low like you. Each image is presented separately and placed within a non-chronological order. The setting of a grotty underground club also adds to the effect of attempting to do it like a dude as it is a common conception that men go to roughly places to emphasis their masculinity. Although the music video is graphic in the gestures Jessie J and the other dancers do, this video can be said to be one of few that have been able to follow the narrative which has been set by the lyrics. The effect of this songs lyrics as well as video on the audience can have various reactions, as some audience members may be offended by the material they are presented with whereas others, such as young females, may find the song liberating in some ways for another female to be able to present a song about gestures, which may be seen by some as inappropriate for females to do. The target audience for a music video also has an influence upon the chosen narrative. The creation of a music video could be based around a certain theme such as a superhero or a sexual theme. You Belong with Me9 by Taylor Swift is an example of a music video which has been targeted a teenage audience pacifically at females within this age group. This narrative has a linear structure and shows the process of the two main characters home lives up to their lives at school showing their different backgrounds at school which the audience would be able to relate back to. The fact that the music video is set within a normal suburban town and a normal high school also adds to the effectiveness of the narrative in attracting a younger female audience. This music video also has an aspect which young females could also relate to, which is longing for a guy to be with them whereas Alejandro10 by Lady Gaga can be said to have been targeted at an older audience, specifically those between their late teens to those in their 20s as it contains graphic sexual scenes which people between this age group can be said to be enticed by. Another area which can affect the narrative of a music video is the reasons behind the portrayal. Various music videos can be said to have a meaning behind it, whether that reason be for a political reason, mediated or just general controversies about the artist being either challenged or created or events of the world at the time. Since the 1980s, sexual content in music videos seems to have become a common theme for artists and directors to use due to its commercial function11. Robbie Williams original video for Rock DJ12 had been censored by various music channels during its release due to the explicit content in which towards the end of the music video Williams starts to tear off his skin in order to get the attention of the female DJ in the video. This created various controversies within different countries such as the Dominican Republic where they did not show the video due to religious reasons claiming that the video was promoting Satanism. One final area which can be said to affect the narrative of a music video is through the artist or directors impact upon the creation of a music video. .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb , .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .postImageUrl , .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb , .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:hover , .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:visited , .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:active { border:0!important; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:active , .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue878fc8687ce884b41ce56d8034eb7fb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: MUsic and its violence EssayAn article I found in NME13 on Cee Lo Green and his new albums tracks Fuck You, Wildflower, Fool for you and Old Fashioned, are based on his relationships. These influences of the relationships can be seen in his music videos styling especially of Fuck You, where the narrative of the video is based upon the girl which he has been after rejects him at every moment he approaches her, whether it be when shes with another guy or just not being attracted to Greens character as he didnt have the change in my pocket to afford a Ferrari. To add to my research I conducted a questionnaire which I aimed at 15 to 25 year olds in order to get a clearer sense of the different preferences within these age groups but also the similarities. Before I constructed my questionnaire, I did various researches into the different forms of genre which have been popular with a mass audience during 2009 to 2010. I found that RnB dominated the Number One Singles14 charts especially in 2010 along with indie rock which to dominated the 200915 charts. The success of various songs can be said to have been down the music video created along with it. The results from my questionnaire showed that a narrative structure was a key essential; however a comedic element to a music video was also wanted by the audience as It tells the story in an amusing way and keeps you interested. The results I gained I used to help construct a focus group of 17 people, who were involved within the questionnaire, to analyse three videos with different themes. For a narrative theme I chose Janie Got A Gun16 by Aerosmith, for a comedic theme Goodbye Mr A17 by the Hoosiers and for a sensual theme Leavin18 by Jesse McCartney. I found that the majority preferred a comedic element of The Hoosiers in comparison to the sensuality of Jesse McCartneys music video as, for some of them, it made them uncomfortable viewing the music video however the majority liked the narrative of Aerosmiths Janies Got A Gun but would have preferred if it was a bit more upbeat. They keep you interestedThey keep you interested In relation to the lyrics, I have found that music videos tend to not completely follow the narrative set out by the lyrics however they do follow it loosely. A narrative can never fully be portrayed due to the structure being fragmented in music video cuts between performance and narrative19An artist or director will find it hard to contain a complete narrative throughout the duration of a music video and may only amplify certain meanings and effects within the songs repeatedly to manipulate the audience emotionally or mentally. King Arthur Essays (478 words) - Knights Of The Round Table, Fiction
King Arthur The uglier the truth the truer the friend is a statement that has been echoed throughout the history of time. In "Camelot", King Arthur experienced this quotation first hand. Even though "Camelot" is a fictional movie, the same situation that befell King Arthur really occurs in real life to everyday people. Just by looking at Pellinore, you would not think that he was a trustworthy man. Dirty, hair uncombed, dingy clothes are all words that could be used to describe Pellinore's appearance. But as the old saying goes "Don't judge a book by its cover" and you should not judge Pellinore by his looks. King Arthur had so many "Yes men" in his court, that he could not depend on them to tell him the truth because they were to worried jeopardizing their position in the court. However, Pellinore did not have this problem because he did not have a position to lose. In Arthur's heart of hearts, he had a feeling that Lancelot and Guinevere were having a physical relationship together. Being the honest and trustworthy man that he was, Arthur refused to believe that his best friend and his wife, whom he loved to death, would do such a deceitful thing to him. Pellinore could not stand to see his friend be the center of rumors. Therefore, he decided to tell Arthur about the dishonesty that was happening right under. Arthur, still in denial, rejected Pellinore's allegation. Only after he was threatened with the prospect of death, did reluctantly refute his allegation. Arthur only saw the light after he witness for himself Lancelot and Guinevere's relationship. The situation that happened to Arthur, also happens to common people. My aunt went through a similar predicament when she was in college. Her roommates boyfriend constantly flirted with her. Tired of his endless advances, she decided to tell her roommate. Her roommate, who was also her friend, did not want to believe what she was saying. So she confronted her boyfriend with the accusation. Of course he denied it and in addition said that my aunt was the one doing the flirting. The roommate sided with her boyfriend and did not talk to her for months. Finally, the roommate saw her boyfriend for who he was. Only after she caught him cheating for herself. Out of everybody in King Arthur's court, only Pellinore came out and told Arthur about Lancelot's and Guinevere's relationship. My aunt was the sole person to tell her roommate about her boyfriend. Later she found out that she was not the only one of her roommate's friends who he had flirted with. The truth hurts. Instead of believing a truth that will hurt, people naturally tend to go into denial. But it still takes a real friend to tell you something that may hurt you now in order for you not being hurt more in the future. King Arthur and my aunt's roommate learned this the hard way. cared about their . In the end they both regretted not listening to the people who truly cared about them.

Free Essays on Scarlet Letter
Scarlett Letter In the Scarlet Letter, the author uses many different types of symbols to show what he has experienced as a young man, and what he has to say about the society during his time. The different settings of the story are ways in which he describes his environment and how it has treated him as a child. One symbol he uses a lot was the scarlet letter. The scarlet letter takes on different meanings as the course of the story progresses. It also takes on various appearances and symbolism. The letter changes from meaning 3adultery2 into meaning 3able.2 Not only does the letter symbolize Hester1s punishment, but it also serves as different personal meanings to the various characters in the story such as Chillingworth, Dimmesdale, and Pearl to name a few. In the Scarlet Letter, there are many different forms of the letter A , not only that, but the letter A also acquires a variety of meanings. Hawthorne describes the prison as 3the black flower of civilized society2 (p.48) Here he uses the build ings to describe the crime and punishment of his early life. And by using the symbol of a tombstone at the end of the story, he1s probably trying to say that crime and cruel punishment could lead to your death. He also uses the grass plot, saying that it is 3much overgrown with burdock,....and such unsightly vegetation2 (p.48) which symbolizes the things that make people corrupt and why these lead to them being in prison. He also uses the wild rosebush to symbolize 3....sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow.2 (p.48). The author also gives somewhat of a dim, chill, social, unkind atmosphere to Puritanism. In Chapter 2 he describes by saying 3like a black shadow...grim and grisly...with a sword by his side, and his staff of office in his hand.2 (p.52).The letter A appears in a variety of forms and appearances. It is the elaborately gold-embroidered A on He... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter Free Essays on Scarlet Letter Evil In Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s Writings Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter and ââ¬Å"Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughterâ⬠, uses the concept of evil as a main theme in some of his stories. ââ¬Å"Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughterâ⬠is not a simple story focusing on a clear line separating good from evil. Instead, the story focuses on the gray area where good and evil overlap. In Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughter, Rappaccini, a scientist who ââ¬Å"cares more for science than for mankindââ¬â¢, makes a solution to keep his daughter pure forever, therefore he is considered the evil in the story. In the Scarlet Letter, Roger Chillingworth is considered the evil, even though one could argue that many of the main characters in the story are sinners or are evil including all of the townspeople. The concept of evil is also shown in contrast to the concept of good in both stories. In The Scarlet Letter, one can argue that it is a romance as well as an evil novel, same can be said with ââ¬Å"Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Da ughterâ⬠, where they contrast between beauty and evil. In Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughter, the theme that any man who touches Rappacciniââ¬â¢s daughter, without his approval will die, gives the story a sense thrill and evil. Rappacciniââ¬â¢s love for science gives him an image of a mad scientist, who sacrifices moral values in exchange for knowledge. He distorts nature and corrupts his daughter in order to satisfy his arrogant pride. This may be considered as pure evil, but he does this actually thinking that his daughter would benefit from his scientific experiment. In my opinion, this was a quest for knowledge and the need for power. By isolating his daughter, Rappaccini knew he could keep her ignorant and dependent upon him. The immense power he has given his daughter is ultimately for his own use and not to protect her.... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter centers round the consequences of sin, especially shame and guilt. It is to be noted that the sin of adultery is, in itself, not the subject matter of the novel. In fact, the novel opens after the sin has been committed and Pearl, the offspring of the sinful, but natural, union is three months old. As Hawthorne himself states in the opening chapter, the novel is about human weakness and its resulting sorrow. Hawthorne's focus of attention is the effect the sin has on Hester and Dimmesdale. They constantly suffer from shame and guilt throughout the novel. Both of them lead joyless lives. Dimmesdale, however, suffers much more intensely than Hester. Hester is made to publicly acknowledge her sin. A scarlet letter "A" is permanently placed on her dress to symbolize her adultery, and she is made to stand on the scaffold with her baby for several hours of public humiliation. She becomes a social outcast of the Puritan society and lives in isolation on the outskirts of town. Pearl, her lively and uncontrollable daughter, is the daily living proof of Hester's sin. With pride, she dresses her daughter in brightly colored clothing and holds her on head up high. She also concerns herself with doing acts of charity and kindnesses for other people. Even though her life is difficult and drab, Hester, through her own doing, rises about the scarlet letter "A" on her chest. In complete contrast to Hester, Dimmesdale does not publicly confess his sin, and it eats away at him bit by bit. His health begins to fail, and his body is seized by nervousness. He hints at his sinfulness in the pulpit, but his congregation simply assumes he is being humble and honors him even more; this only increases his sense of shame and guilt. Chillingworth, who realizes that Dimmesdale is Pearl's father, adds to the minister's torture. Under the guise of help, the evil physician torments Dimmesdale daily. ... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter Chapter One: The Prison Door Summary A large crowd of Puritans stands outside of the prison, waiting for the door to open. The prison is described as a, "wooden jail...already marked with weather-stains and other indications of age which gave a yet darker aspect to its beetle-browed and gloomy front." The iron on the prison is rusting and creates an overall appearance of decay. Outside of the building, next to the door, a rosebush stands in full bloom. Hawthorne remarks that it is possible, "this rosebush...had sprung up under the footsteps of the sainted Ann Hutchinson, as she entered the prison door." He then plucks one of the roses and offers it to the reader as a "moral blossom" to be found later in the story. Chapter Two: The Market Place Summary The crowd in front of the jail is a mixture of men and women, all maintaining severe looks of disapproval. Several of the women begin to discuss Hester Prynne, and soon vow that Hester would not have received such a light sentence for her crime if they had been the judges. One woman, the ugliest of the group, goes so far as to advocate death for Hester. Hester emerges from the prison with elegance and a lady-like air to her movements. She clutches her three month old daughter, Pearl. She has sown a large scarlet "A" over her breast, using her finest skill to make the badge of shame appear to be a decoration. Several of the women are outraged when they see how she has chosen to display the letter, and want to rip it off. Hester is led through the crowd to the scaffold of the pillory. She ascends the stairs and stands, now fully revealed to the crowd, in her position of shame and punishment for the next few hours. Hawthorne compares her beauty and elegance while on the scaffold to an image of Madonna and Child, or Divine Maternity. The ordeal is strenuous and difficult for Hester. She tries to make the images in front of her vanish by thinking about her past. It is revealed ... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter Hawthorneââ¬â¢s introduction to the Scarlet Letter explains his experience(s) in his native town of Salem. He specifies what his goal for the reader is going to be. Spending a lot of his time at the Custom-House (a governmental building in Salem) he describes the atmosphere and diversities of the people who walk up those granite steps. His reason for creating the Custom- House short novel was to introduce a group of short works as well as the long story which was not yet completed, however, his publisher James Fields encouraged Hawthorne to let ââ¬Å"The Scarlet Letterâ⬠stand alone. In his native town of Salem, he describes the Custom-House as a sort of old, unattractive building. He elaborates the physical sense of the buildings exterior with the American flag that hangs vertically and the banner of the republic on the roof which he describes as it ââ¬Å"floats or droops, in breeze or calm.â⬠But he gives an in-depth description of the bald eagle that hangs proudly over the entrance of the building. He states ââ¬Å"......to warn all citizens, careful of their safety, against intruding on the premises which she overshadows with her wings: nevertheless, vixenly as she looks, many people are seeking, at this very moment, to shelter themselves under the wing of the federal eagle.â⬠The many different people that came to the Custom-House as Hawthorne exclaims ââ¬Å"made it a stirring scene.â⬠as many as three to four vessels would arrive at a time usually from Africa or South America. They would come into the Custom-House tired and exhausted from long days on their voyages at sea.... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter Secret Sin Leads to Guilt In ââ¬Å"The Scarlet Letterâ⬠, Hawthorne depicts a way of life that no longer exists in todayââ¬â¢s society. It was a society of fear in a strict moral code. The morals, which were based on religious beliefs, were usually taken too seriously and gave birth to a generation of extremists known as puritans. Many puritans had ridiculously harsh punishments when a law was broken which caused many to live secretly. Secrets are never revealed or told to others in the puritan community. When Chillingworth says to Dimmesdale ââ¬Å"Yet some men bury their secrets thusâ⬠it shows to what extent puritans would go to keep their sins hidden from the public (Hawthorne 130). The fact that Dimmesdale could not tell anyone what he had done for fear of punishment and rejection is clearly shown by Chillingworthsââ¬â¢ tormenting comments. Once secrets were out everyone in the community knew about it immediately. Hester cannot even bring herself to tell her own daughter the true reason for the scarlet letter, which seems everyone but Pearl knows. Hester states, ââ¬Å"I will keep thy secret, as I have hisâ⬠which shows her intent on keeping her secret (Hawthorne 45). Many of these secrets are somewhat acceptable in our society, which contrasts the different generations. In todayââ¬â¢s world many people commit sins on a daily basis without feeling guilty. Things such as adultery seem a trivial matter because it is not considered illegal. When the third matron says ââ¬Å"At the very least, they should have put the brand of hot iron on Hester Prynneââ¬â¢s foreheadâ⬠it shows how serious adultery is taken to the puritans. These strong beliefs ruined many peopleââ¬â¢s lives due to living a lie in order to escape the peopleââ¬â¢s harshness. Dimmesdale kept his relationship with Hester a secret, which ultimately kills him. If Dimmesdale had been able to speak freely of his sin, the guilt and stress that built up inside of him would have dimin... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter The Pariah ââ¬Å"â⬠¦The talk of the neighboring townspeople, who, seeking vainly elsewhere for the childââ¬â¢s paternity, and observing some of her odd attributes, had given out that poor little Pearl was a demon offspringâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬â page 95 of Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s The Scarlet Letter. Since Pearl had no known father, the townspeople gossiped freely of Hester and her Pearl. Because Dimmesdale was not revealed as her father until later in the novel, Pearl suffered the early years of her life as an outcast. Pearl was taunted and stared at by other children. She was even almost taken away from Hester as a toddler. Despite being born of shameful beginnings, Pearl overcomes her lowly status as an outcast; although she is labeled as the ââ¬Å"witch childâ⬠of an ignominious mother, does not get a clear explanation of her origin until the day of her fatherââ¬â¢s death, and when she does, it changes her fate as the ââ¬Å"under-dogâ⬠. Everyone has been teased in his or her lifetime. Some forms are harmless, and others are down right cruel. Teasing pertains to Pearl because she is teased unmercifully by the Puritan children. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ The children of the Puritans looked up from their playâ⬠¦ and spoke gravely one to another: ââ¬ËBehold, verily, there is the woman of the scarlet letter, and, of a truth, moreover, there is the likeness of the scarlet letter running along by her side! Come, therefore, and let us fling mud at them!ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (98). Since Pearl senses that she is an outcast, she scares the Puritan children by jabbering indistinctly and making wild gestures while shrieking. This causes the nobles of the town to question Hesterââ¬â¢s values in child rearing. Pearl, however, beats all odds and is a success story. Ard 2 The magistrate asks Pearl a simple question, ââ¬Å"Canst thou tell me, my child, who made thee?â⬠ââ¬â(107). Pearl replies that she had not been made at all, but that she had been plucked off the wild rosebush that grew by the prison d... Free Essays on Scarlet Letter Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter The book The Scarlet Letter is all about symbolism. People and objects are symbolic of events and thoughts. Throughout the course of the book, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Hester, Pearl, and Arthur Dimmesdale to signify Puritanic and Romantic philosophies. Hester Prynne, through the eyes of the Puritans, is an extreme sinner; she has gone against the Puritan ways, committing adultery. For this irrevocably harsh sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life. However, the Romantic philosophies of Hawthorne put down the Puritanic beliefs. She is a beautiful, young woman who has sinned, but is forgiven. Hawthorne portrays Hester as "divine maternity" and she can do no wrong. Not only Hester, but the physical scarlet letter, a Puritanical sign of disownment, is shown through the author's tone and diction as a beautiful, gold and colorful piece. Pearl, Hester's child, is portrayed Puritanically, as a child of sin who should be treated as such, ugly, evil, and shamed. The reader more evidently notices that Hawthorne carefully, and sometimes not subtly at all, places Pearl above the rest. She wears colorful clothes, is extremely smart, pretty, and nice. More often than not, she shows her intelligence and free thought, a trait of the Romantics. One of Pearl's favorite activities is playing with flowers and trees. (The reader will recall that anything affiliated with the forest was evil to Puritans. To Hawthorne, however, the forest was beautiful and natural.) "And she was gentler here [the forest] than in the grassy-margined streets of the settlement, or in her mother's cottage. The flowers appeared to know it" (194)Pearl fit in with natural things. Also, Pearl is always effervescent and joyous, which is definitely a negative to the Puritans. Pearl is a virtual shouting match between the Puritanical views and the Romantic ways. To most, but especially the Puritans, one of the most import...
